Vocal Range Calculator
To find your vocal range select your lowest comfortable note and highest comfortable note you can sing in Hz from the dropdown menus in voice range calculator, select E3 for lowest note and C5 for highest note.
The vocal range finding calculator will display your total range, span in octaves and semitones, and approximate voice type.
- Lowest Note: 110 Hz (A2)
- Highest Note: 880 Hz (A5)
- Vocal Range = log2(880 / 110) = 3 octaves Result: 3 octaves

Vocal Range Formula
Vocal Range (octaves) = log2(Highest Note (Hz) / Lowest Note (Hz))
- Lowest Note (Hz): The frequency of the lowest note you can sing.
- Highest Note (Hz): The frequency of the highest note you can sing.
Semitone Range = Highest Note Value - Lowest Note Value
Octaves = Floor(Semitone Range ÷ 12)
Remaining Semitones = Semitone Range MOD 12
Where:
- Note Values: Numerical values assigned to each note
- 12: Number of semitones in an octave
- Floor: Rounds down to nearest whole number
- MOD: Remainder after division
Parameters
- Lowest Note: Bottom of comfortable range
- Highest Note: Top of comfortable range
- Voice Type Ranges:
- Bass: C2-E4
- Baritone: G2-G4
- Tenor: C3-C5
- Alto: G3-G5
- Soprano: C4-C6
For range G2 to C4: Semitones = 17, equals 1 octave and 5 semitones. Voice type indicates Bass/Baritone range.
Lowest Note: 196 Hz (G3) and Highest Note: 1568 Hz (G6)
Vocal Range = log2(1568 / 196) = 3 octaves Result: 3 octaves
How to Find Your Vocal Range?
To find your vocal range, start with your most comfortable speaking pitch, then sing down until you reach your lowest clear note and up to your highest clear note.
If you can sing clearly from F2 to F4, that’s your vocal range. Record these notes and use them to determine your voice type.
From C3 to C5: 24 semitones = 2 octaves, indicating Tenor range.
For G2 to G4: 24 semitones = 2 octaves, indicating Baritone range.
And from C4 to C6: 24 semitones = 2 octaves, indicating Soprano range.
What is Vocal Range?
Vocal Range: The vocal range is the span between the lowest and highest notes a person can sing comfortably. It typically covers 1.5 to 2 octaves (18-24 semitones) and helps determine voice classification. For example, a baritone might range from G2 to G4, while a soprano might range from C4 to C6.
Voice Types: A person’s voice type is determined by their comfortable singing range, timbre, and vocal transitions. For example, a male voice starting around C2-G2 typically indicates bass, while a female voice reaching up to C6 typically indicates soprano.
