Grain Bin Capacity Formula

Flat Bottom Grain Bin:

Volume (m³) = π × r² × h

Hopper Bottom Grain Bin:

Volume (m³) = π × r² × h + (1/3) × π × r² × r

Where:

  • r: Radius of the bin (r = Diameter / 2)
  • h: Height of the bin
Volume (cu.ft) = π × radius² × height
Bushels = Volume ÷ 1.244

Parameters:

  • π: Pi (3.14159)
  • radius: Bin diameter ÷ 2
  • height: Height to eave
  • 1.244: Cubic feet per bushel

A bin 30 feet in diameter and 20 feet high: Volume = 3.14159 × (15)² × 20 = 14,137 cu.ft. Capacity = 14,137 ÷ 1.244 = 11,364 bushels.

How to Calculate Grain Bin Capacity?

To calculate bin capacity, first find the bin’s volume by multiplying π by the radius squared by the height. Then divide by 1.244 to convert to bushels. For a bin 24 feet in diameter (12-foot radius) and 16 feet high has a volume of 7,238 cu.ft, which equals 5,818 bushels.

For a bin 36 feet × 24 feet: 24,429 bushels at full capacity, 18,322 bushels at 75%, 12,215 bushels at 50%.

With bin 48 feet × 32 feet: 57,947 bushels at full capacity, 43,460 bushels at 75%, 28,974 bushels at 50%.

A bin 30 feet × 18 feet: 10,228 bushels at full capacity, 7,671 bushels at 75%, 5,114 bushels at 50%.
