12 Hour Shift Pay Formula

Total Pay = (Hourly Rate × 8) + (Overtime Rate × 4) + Allowances

Here:

  • Hourly Rate: Regular hourly pay for 8 hours of work.
  • Overtime Rate: Higher hourly pay for 4 hours of overtime.
  • Allowances: Additional payments (e.g., meals, transportation).
Regular Hours = Number of Shifts × 8
Overtime Hours = Number of Shifts × 4
Regular Pay = Regular Hours × Hourly Rate
Overtime Pay = Overtime Hours × (Hourly Rate × 1.5)
Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

Parameters

  • Hourly Rate: Base pay rate per hour
  • Number of Shifts: Total 12-hour shifts worked
  • Regular Hours: First 8 hours of each shift
  • Overtime Hours: Last 4 hours of each shift
  • Overtime Rate: 1.5 times regular hourly rate

For $20/hour and 5 shifts: Regular Pay = 40 hours × $20 = $800. Overtime Pay = 20 hours × $30 = $600. Total Pay = $1,400.

How to Calculate 12 Hour Shift Pay?

To calculate 12-hour shift pay, first multiply your hourly rate by 8 to get regular pay per shift, then multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 times 4 for overtime pay per shift.

At $25/hour, one shift earns $200 regular pay (8 × $25) plus $150 overtime pay (4 × $37.50), totaling $350 per shift.

At $18/hour for 4 shifts: $576 regular pay + $432 overtime = $1,008 total.

With $22/hour for 6 shifts: $1,056 regular pay + $792 overtime = $1,848 total.

For $30/hour for 3 shifts: $720 regular pay + $540 overtime = $1,260 total.

What is 12 Hour Shift Pay?

Regular Hours: The first 8 hours of a 12-hour shift are paid at the standard hourly rate. For example, if your rate is $20/hour, you earn $160 in regular pay per shift (8 × $20).

Overtime Hours: The remaining 4 hours are typically paid at 1.5 times the regular rate. Using the same $20/hour rate, overtime pay would be $120 per shift (4 × $30), making total shift pay $280.
